Violet's First Vacation!

I'm happy to report we successfully brought Violet to Boston and back this past weekend. It was her first time out of New York City!

We were there for Sue's cousin's wedding - actually, her second cousin. Me, I wouldn't know if my second cousin was working in the same building as me, but that side of Sue's family tends to stay close. Much of the weekend involved introducing Violet to lots of relatives, including her third cousin, Helen. Who in the world has (knowingly) ever met any of their third cousins? Given that Violet is only six weeks old and Helen is only six months old, I doubt they'll remember meeting (though I do have photographic evidence). But given that there are three guys in Sue's generation who are still years away from getting married, I have no doubt that the two will be playing happily at some future family wedding.

Violet slept through almost all of the car trip, and was very good while various relatives manhandled her. She only melted down when we got to the church and - of course - right in the middle of the wedding ceremony. (What can I say - gals always cry at weddings.) But a quick feeding made her happy and she was content to sleep through the entire reception. We stayed awake and had a fun time. All in all, the weekend worked out great. Sure, it helped to have lots of relatives eager to take turns holding the baby, but we're still confident in our ability to pull off a road trip to Florida next month.

(More photos from the wedding are here - as of today, I've only uploaded a quarter of the photos I have, so check back over the next few weeks if you're interested...)

I bet sbtorpey has met third cousins. Best I can say for myself is that I met a few second cousins on a visit to Uruguay 20-something years ago...

I don't have any first cousins that I know of. (My dad is an only child and my mom is estranged from her siblings.) So the only cousins I know are second cousins on my dad's side. He was fairly close with his cousins growing up since they all were about the same age.

Actually, I guess I've met a couple of my second cousins on occasion, but not so much that I'd even remember their names. As for first cousins, I only have four, and I've only seen one of them once in the past twenty-two years. Given that my mom is an only child, she never knew her father, my dad only has one brother, and his mom was an only child, I have a tiny family, and that's what I'm used to. It's almost perplexing to me that Sue has such a large and extended one...

3rd cousins and 4th perhaps?

Well, my father is the baby of a large family. There is 20 yrs difference between himself and his oldest brother, so...he nieces and nephews his age and older than himself(those being my first cousins), so I have many second cousins who are older and or younger than me and my age that of course living in the small town of VB I knew and went to school with. So now most of my third cousins are my kids ages....I am getting lost here would that make them Ethan nd Emma's 4th cousins?? Or do I have that line up totally skewed? Of course funerals and weddings are really the only time we see each other now.

Well, since you're lost, here's how it works:

  • Your parents' siblings' children are your first cousins.

  • Your first cousins' children are your first cousins once removed.

  • Your first cousins' grandchildren are your first cousins twice removed.

  • Your parents' first cousins are *also* your first cousins once removed.

  • Your parents' first cousins' children are your second cousins.

  • Your second cousins' children are your second cousins once removed.

  • Your second cousins' grandchildren are your second cousins twice removed.

  • Your parents' second cousins' children are your third cousins.

And so on. Make sense so far? So...

  • Your children and your siblings' children (who are your nieces and nephews) are first cousins.

  • Your children and your first cousins' children (who are your first cousins once removed) are second cousins.

  • Your children and your second cousins' children (who are your second cousins once removed) are third cousins.

Another way to look at it:

  • The nearest relatives you and your first cousins have in common are your grandparents.

  • The nearest relatives you and your second cousins have in common are your great-grandparents.

  • The nearest relatives you and your third cousins have in common are your great-great-grandparents.

Whew!

Of course, everyone up in Van Buren is related to one another, so I'm sure you do know plenty of third, fourth, and ninth cousins!
