Happy My Birthday To You
Seven years ago on my birthday, I was water-skiing on Lake Como and staying at the beautiful Villa D'Este. This year, my birthday is no Italian luxury resort, but it was very nice for my neighbor to take me out to lunch and extremely nice of her to offer to take care of Violet while Sue and I go out to dinner tonight, and it was nice of my brother to stop by, and I'm appreciating all the nice phone calls and emails and Facebook messages - thank you each and every one of you.
Recently, I've been noticing that people who I think are older than me are actually my age. I hate that - it means that I probably look older than I think I do. That'll probably be true for the rest of my life.
So I was wondering, who *is* my age? Here's what I discovered on imdb:
- Born in 1970, older than me - Zack de la Rocha (1/12), Skeet Ulrich (1/20), Heather Graham (1/29), Simon Pegg (2/14), John Frusciante (3/5), Jordan Knight (3/17), Queen Latifah (3/18), Lara Flynn Boyle (3/24), Vince Vaughn (3/28), Jennifer Weiner (3/28), Jason Lee (4/25), Melania Trump (4/26), Andre Agassi (4/29), Uma Thurman (4/29), Will Arnett (5/4), Ghostface Killah (5/9), Tina Fey (5/18), Naomi Campbell (5/22), Rivers Cuomo (6/13), Phil Mickelson (6/16), Will Forte (6/17)
- Born in 1970, same day as me - Glenn Medeiros (6/24)
- Born in 1970, younger than me - Beck (7/8), Kevin Smith (8/2), Wendy Whoppers (8/13), Malcolm-Jamal Warner (8/18), Fat Joe (8/19), Jay Mohr (8/23), Claudia Schiffer (8/25), Debbie Gibson (8/31), Mystikal (9/22), Ani DiFranco (9/23), Tony Hale (9/30), Kelly Ripa (10/2), Matt Damon (10/8), Michelle Malkin (10/20), Jasmin St. Claire (10/23), Ethan Hawke (11/6), Morgan Spurlock (11/7), Sarah Silverman (12/1), Jennifer Connelly (12/12), The Naked Cowboy (12/23)
- Born in 1970, dead - River Phoenix (8/23), Savannah (10/9)
You might have noticed that I also discovered that imdb has listings for porn stars. I really couldn't resist adding "Wendy Whoppers" to the list, whoever she is. Feel free to google her.
Sigh. Tomorrow is just another day...

Stupid Lousy Perfect Weather
I need to kick some meteorologists in the butt.
I had planned to have a birthday get-together at the beach yesterday, but yesterday morning, the weather reports all said thunderstorms, possibly severe ones, all afternoon. So I called all the people who were planning on coming (unlike in years past, this year I actually convinced more than one person to come with us - why is it so hard to get people to the beach?) and cancelled. It seemed like the prudent thing to do.
And then I sat at home all day and moped, angry at the beautiful warm sunny day it turned out to be.
Fortunately, I did manage to check one project off of my (long) list: photographing Reunions cups. You see, currently taking up space in our attic are hundreds of cups I've collected over the past twenty years of going to Reunions. For years, I've been meaning to organize and take pictures of them, so I can get rid of them less reluctantly. And so that became my day's project - sitting outside on my roof deck, taking picture after picture (sitting under the deck umbrella because it was TOO SUNNY - stupid meteorologists), then sitting inside at night uploading them all. (Here they are, if you're interested.) And now I'm talking to the Princetoniana committee to see if they'll take them off my hands and give them a good home.
So at least it was a productive day. Now I probably should search through other piles of junk to see what I can photograph and chuck. I could probably clean out my entire house that way...
Oh yeah, and we've rescheduled the beach trip for Saturday. Unless it rains.

Happy Birthday To Me!
Everywhere, June 24, 2007 - Didn't I just have a birthday last year? Well, I'm having one again. We had a party at our house Friday night (photos here) so we'd have the whole weekend to recover. But I actually felt pretty good Saturday. Tired, but good. I hardly did anything at all, which suited me just fine. As for my actual birthday, we're planning on going to the beach - and happily, it's supposed to be a nice day for it. So as birthday weekends go, this is looking to be a good one!

Hooray For Birthdays
Manhattan, March 30, 2007 - Birthdays are good excuses to summon your friends to a bar. (Other good excuses include Fridays and Saturdays). Sue's birthday wasn't until next week, but that following weekend was Easter weekend, and we were hosting my family. So party in March it was. It's close enough.
As always, we had a fun time, even with the lousy and rude service. We were at the bar from 7pm until 1am, ordering drinks and food (which all came slowly), and at some point a waitress asked some in our party, who were happily sitting on the couches, to get up because others wanted to sit. When my friends refused, she claimed that others had reserved the space, which was a lie, because I tried to reserve space ahead of time and was told they don't do that on Friday nights. My friends were a bit shocked (wouldn't you be?) but they handled it well, and the waitress eventually gave up. Although when it was time to pay the bill, she had added an 18% tip, which was about 17% more than she deserved. (I hate tipping as it is, but that's another rant.)
It wasn't enough to ruin the night, thankfully. If you're interested in seeing (and who wouldn't be?) my photos from the night are here (and while I'm at it, photos of our Easter with my family are here).
This week at work I'm still recovering from my hard drive failure, which happened a week and a half ago. Nothing is ever easy. But the light at the end of the tunnel is yet another vacation! Stay tuned.

More Birthdays
Everywhere, September 18, 2006 - Happy birthday, sbtorpey! Good luck dealing with your one-third-life crisis. Remember, 33 is the new 31.
We had a fun picnic with her and oddthink and a bunch of their friends yesterday in Central Park, with picnic basket and red gingham tablecloth and everything. Even ants. Which for some reason attacked her backpack, where there was no food, and left the actual food alone. Either they were dumb ants or they were trying to cause a diversion.
Today is also my friend John's birthday. We were out with him and some other friends on Saturday night at a Russian bathhouse downtown, which is not as seedy as it sounds. No, it turned out to be a great idea - get a group of friends together, and stay as long as you'd like in the pool or hot tub or sauna or steam room. Plus there's a juice bar and Russian food. And spa treatments if you so desire. And, happily, a good number of hot Russian chicks. I had expected nothing but old men beating each other with birch branches, but I guess late Saturday night the younger crowd comes out. There were still birch branches, though. The birch-branch therapy in the sauna was a pretty impressive display; I felt like applauding after watching it. With five or six other people, it'd make for a decent off-Broadway performance art thing in the mold of Tap Dogs or Stomp.
After we were done soaking and steaming, we ambled over to the South Street Seaport, which I didn't realize was so hopping on Saturday nights. Right on the East River there was an outdoor bar, a DJ spinning tunes, and tons of people drinking and dancing and enjoying the beautiful weather and views. I was fascinated - I had no idea something like this existed, assuming as most New Yorkers do that the Seaport is a dead tourist zone.
Well, adjacent to that bar, there's a nifty performance space called the Spiegeltent, where we saw a band called Man Man. I'd never heard of them before - they play some sort of punk gypsy-ish stuff. I didn't hate it. The DJ was still on after the concert was over a little after 2am, so we stayed out for a while watching the moon rise over the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges.
Today is also my friend Edna's birthday. She's in Paris, so we didn't spend any time with her, although we would have loved to!
So happy birthday to you all! (Did I miss anyone? Besides Lance Armstrong?)
UPDATE: Of course I did. Sorry about that, Scott!! I hope you had a wonderful day and got to ogle some hot Russian chicks. Now I can't possibly know anyone else who was born on September 18, can I?

It's Always Someone's Birthday
Everywhere, July 20, 2006 - Happy birthday, oddthink! Enjoy your day of whatever it is you're planning on doing. I hope it involves a ruffled tuxedo shirt, of any color.
(The picture is from Reunions 2004. Nowhere else in the world can you dress like this. Which is a shame, really...)

Buoy Girl In The Summertime
Everywhere, July 11, 2006 - Happy birthday, buoy_girl! You're definitely twice the woman you were at 18!
It's just another normal workday for me. I was down over ten whole dollars at Belmont this past Saturday, so I had to drown my sorrows on Saturday night. And Sunday night (okay, I had gotten over my cursed luck by then; that was just from having the neighbors over for dinner). So you know, I won't be raising a glass for you in actuality tonight, but I'll be raising a glass for you in spirit...

Birthdays
Everywhere, June 29, 2006 - Happy Birthday, rebbyribs!! I was stuck at home all day without internet access, and the cable guy showed up to fix it half an hour after the four-hour window I was given. Hope you had a far better day than that!
As for my birthday this past weekend, I've had better (2001 - a friend's wedding at the incomparable Villa D'Este in Lake Como, Italy, complete with waterskiing), but I've had worse (1995 - all by myself in Stuart, Florida). The rain came and ruined our beach plans, so all I did during the day was go for a run, have some pizza, and take a nap. We went out for an early dinner (7pm is early), then met up with folks (including sbtorpey and oddthink) at Gaslight Lounge, where we stayed until after 2. By 11 I had said I was swearing off any more drinking, but friends kept showing up throughout the night and insisting on buying me gin and tonics (gins and tonics?). My friends are trying to kill me. Sue and I got home (alone) around 3 and I proceeded to have the worst night's sleep ever. Amazingly, I got up around 8 feeling tired, but otherwise fine. Still, I was tired enough that I didn't set foot outside on Sunday all day. I need more Sundays like that...

Happy Birthday To Me
Everywhere, June 24, 2006 - The ideal birthday: the whole world - even the zombies - celebrate. A pretty darn good birthday: the boss gives you the day off (check: it's Saturday); you spend the day at the beach with friends (check: unless it rains); you have a fantastic dinner at a trendy new restaurant in the Meatpacking District (check: Craftsteak); you go out to a nearby hip bar (check: Gaslight Lounge) with more friends and party all night with America's top models (we'll see); afterward your wife invites a sexy friend or two to come home to continue the party (I'm so sure); the next day you wake up - no hangover! (okay, now I'm asking way too much...)
Well, I'm getting ahead of myself. It's supposed to rain, rain rain. Probably no beach. So it'll probably only be a mostly darn good birthday. You're all welcome to celebrate anyway.
